Interesting how much the French like to pin their problems on their top politicians.
On the one hand, they are compulsively secular; on the other hand, they stand around like lemmings at the cart stuck in the mud and complain that no political messiah comes along to pull it out with boundless selflessness, sweetly alluring siren songs, and superhuman intelligence — naturally without touching their hard-won rights.
Is that still a restrained kind of obedience to authority, or already habitual hypocrisy? Either way.
In the past, one might have asked about the shortcomings of the national character of a notoriously deficient country.
These French: too secular for a soul, too postmodern for a people, and their undoubtedly masochistically inclined representatives are automatically to blame.
Is a people that has lost its virtue still capable of democracy? THAT is the crunch question.
Who do these French remind me of? Oh right — of ourselves.
